AHEPA and DOP play BINGO for a cause!
In a true display of fraternal-sororal spirit, Daughters of Penelope Sparta Chapter 18 in Stockton, California, held a virtual bingo event on May 6, 2023, to raise money for an Ahepan from New York who battled cancer. Supreme President Jimmy Kokotas and DOP Grand President Georgette Boulegeris participated in fundraiser.
Brother Bobby Gemelas, of Port Jefferson Chapter 319, passed away on April 23, 2023, after a yearlong courageous battle with cancer. He was a valuable member of the AHEPA District 6 Lodge and left behind a beautiful wife, Samantha, and an eight- month-old daughter, Kalligrace. Over 500 bingo cards were sold to 85 players, making this the largest virtual bingo event they have hosted thus far. Proceeds from the event went to benefit Brother Bobby’s daughter. Donations are ongoing to support the future of Kalligrace and her education. For more information, please e-mail ahepa.district6@gmail.com
AHEPA Partners with IOCC to rebuild houses
AHEPA and the IOCC have a longstanding history of partnering together for humanitarian causes, most notably, shipping medical supplies to Greece valued at millions of dollars. AHEPA has partnered with the IOCC again to help rebuild communities across America that have sustained damage from natural disasters. Supreme President Jimmy Kokotas asks that every chapter try to coordinate with the IOCC to assist in this rewarding community service program.

Mavroyannis Scholarship Application Opens
AHEPA Educational Foundation Chairman George Vorkas, on behalf of Supreme President Kokotas, is pleased to announce its continued partnership with the Mavroyannis Family to offer the Constantine and Patricia Mavroyannis Scholarship.
The Constantine and Patricia Mavroyannis Scholarship is open to graduate students who are either Greek or of Greek heritage and are enrolled in a PhD program in either theoretical physics or physical chemistry in the Faculty of Science at a North American university. The scholarship is in the amount of $5,000 and will be awarded in the fall semester.
Thanks to the generosity of Dr. Constantine and Mrs. Patricia Mavroyannis, this scholarship recognizes scholastic achievement and an interest and commitment to studying theoretical physics or physical chemistry by providing financial assistance to Hellenic graduate students to pursue their studies in these fields.
Help Us Grow the Congressional Hellenic Caucus!
The 118th Congress is well underway. AHEPA congratulates the newly established leadership of the bipartisan Congressional Caucus on Hellenic Issues: U.S. Reps. Gus M. Bilirakis (R-FL) and Chris Pappas (D-NH), who are serving as co-chairs. We are also excited to see the Caucus establish vice chair positions and congratulate U.S. Reps. Dina Titus (D-NV) and Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY), who serve in that role. We look forward to working with the Caucus’s leadership, and the entire Caucus body, to help it meet its goals and objectives for the 118th Congress.
The AHEPA family can assist the Hellenic Caucus by helping it to grow. Membership stands at 91 U.S. representatives.

Mothers’ lives in ancient Greece were not easy — but celebrations of their love have survived across the centuries
The Conversation (May 8)
As a father of three and the husband of an amazing woman, I know that one day a year is far too little to recognize everything mothers do. But my work as a scholar of ancient Greek literature has shown me how much harder it was to be a mother in antiquity. read more
Greece’s Elgin Marbles Are Not Britain’s to Keep
Bloomberg (May 4)
Pope Francis last month returned to Greece the Parthenon marbles held by the Vatican Museums for some 100 years. It’s high time Britain followed the Argentine pontiff’s example. Next year, when Greece marks the 50th anniversary of the return of democratic rule, presents an ideal opportunity. read more
WSJ: Thinking Positive Made Venture Capitalist John Pappajohn Very Rich
The National Herald (May 8)
He had a rich, full life — living until 94 — and along the way, John Pappajohn of Iowa went from running an insurance company to taking bets on venture capital that made him so much money he gave away $100 million. How did he do it? PMA, he said — a Positive Mental Attitude ingrained when he was a young insurance agent in the 1960s and read a book by self-help author W. Clement Stone that instilled it in him. read more
Ange Postecoglou: The boy from Greece who became Celtic’s main man
BBC Sport (May 8)
It could be argued that the most arresting picture of Ange Postecoglou is not anything taken at the side of a football field with Celtic, not a shot of him celebrating his first or his second Scottish Premiership title, or his first or his second Scottish League Cup title. Nothing, really, from his successful days at Yokohama Marinos or Brisbane Roar or the Socceroos or South Melbourne Hellas can hold a candle to the photograph taken of him as a five-year-old holding a card with the number 24 on it. read more
With no venue for cup final, Greek soccer back in turmoil
AP (May 3)
Rival club owners have been accused of a “concerted and organized effort” to disrupt Greek soccer. The country’s soccer federation has failed to find a venue for the Greek Cup final between AEK Athens and PAOK Thessaloniki on May 24 after seeking assistance to host the match in Cyprus, England, Germany or Australia. read more
